Neither travel in Afghanistan nor genetic testing is cheap. In 2003 we will be fielding a larger team than in 2002 and will collect about 1,000 genetic samples all over Afghanistan, most importantly, in Nuristan.
The 2002 Expedition to Afghanistan was financed by the extraordinary generosity of readers of the Spectator, who were invited to become Patrons of the Expedition for a payment of £100, which financed one day’s testing. A number of people, very generously, sponsored more than one day. In return, Patrons receive a free copy of my book, a copy of all the scientific papers we publish on the genetic inheritance of the modern Afghan population, an invitation to the lecture at the Royal Geographical Society announcing the results and, perhaps most importantly, the satisfaction of having helped solve a question that has preoccupied western explorers since the nineteenth century.
In the same way, we are seeking more seeking more enlightened and intellectually curious people to defray the cost of the 2003 Expedition. You may do so by writing to me at:
The Spectator Alexander in Afghanistan Expedition,
56 Doughty Street,
London WC1N 2LL
or phoning the office on 01962 738492 (from abroad 00 44 1962 738492.) Please make cheques payable to The Spectator Alexander in Afghanistan Expedition.
